Curriculum

At Brentwood Community College, every young person follows a study programme designed to promote independence, confidence and fully prepare them for adulthood.  We believe that all learners with SEND should have the same opportunities as their peers - to make friends, explore their interests, be an active part of their community and work towards their aspirations. Learning is always purposeful and aligned with each young person’s Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP) outcomes. Progress is tracked for every student across every session and we recognise even the smallest steps of progress.

Person‑Centred and Flexible Curriculum

All learners are baselined to identify their skills across all four Preparation for Adulthood (PfA) areas. This ensures that teaching is differentiated appropriately and each learner works at the right level for them.

Every student has three long‑term targets which underpin their whole programme:

  • Communication
  • Work Skills
  • Life Skills

These are supported by termly targets in each area, providing clear focus, regular review and ongoing progression. Learners work on these targets across sessions.

Our curriculum is aligned with the four key PfA areas:

  • Employment – developing work-related skills and enterprise skills in real-life contexts
  • Independent Living – functional and domestic skills
  • Community Inclusion – accessing the local community safely and confidently, developing friendships and relationships
  • Health & Wellbeing – improving physical and mental health

This ensures that every learner’s programme is broad, meaningful and connected to their life beyond college.

A Rich and Purposeful Curriculum Offer

Learners access a personalised timetable made up of a range of sessions and experiences, all linked to their targets and EHCP outcomes. These may include:

  • Independent Living
  • Horticulture
  • Health
  • Community Skills
  • Social Enterprise

Learning is evidenced and celebrated through the Recognising and Recording Progress and Achievement (RARPA) process, ensuring that learners’ progress is meaningful, personalised and well‑documented.  Student voice is built into everything we do. We support learners to make choices and communicate preferences and they take an active role in shaping their college experience.
